Barbara Nehlich, 62, Watertown, SD, died Monday, May 29, 2023 at the Eureka Community Hospital, Eureka, SD. Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M., Monday, June 5, 2023 at Zion American Lutheran Church, Eureka, led by Pastor Ryan Gage. Interment follows at the Church Cemetery. Ushers will be Connie Woehlhaff and Kevin Hoff. Organist will be Robin Wolff and the congregation will sing “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”, “Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound”, “Just as I am, without One Plea”, and “Borning Cry”.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Sunday at Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel, Eureka, with family present from 5:00-6:00 PM.

Barbara Ann Matz, daughter of Mildred (Graff) and Emil Matz, was born September 19, 1960 at Aberdeen, SD. The family lived briefly in Claremont, SD and then settled in Eureka. Barb attended Eureka Public School, graduating with the Class of 1979. She married Kevin Nehlich at the Eureka Reformed Church on July 1, 1979. They lived briefly in Eureka, Watertown, SD, Aberdeen, and Ipswich, SD. In 1985 they settled in Eureka. Barb was a Certified Nurses Aide at the Lutheran Home, now Avera Eureka Healthcare Center, for 20 years. In 2006 the couple relocated to Watertown where she worked at a Walgreen’s and at a daycare center. She then left the workforce to watch her grandchildren. In 2014, Barb was diagnosed with Cerebellar Ataxia, which she contended with the rest of her life. At the time of her death, she and Kevin were in the process of relocating to Eureka. Barb was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown, the Eureka Jaycees, and was a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed stitching plastic canvases and especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren.
In addition to Kevin, her husband of 43 years, Barb is survived by her mother, Mildred “Millie” Suchomel of Aberdeen; her step-father, Ed Suchomel of Aberdeen; two sons—Bobby Nehlich of Deer Lodge, MT and Wayne (Theresa) Nehlich of Eureka; three daughters—Christy (Michael) Schwingler of Hillsview, SD, Melissa Koester of Huron, SD, and Amanda (John) Renz of Rapid City, SD; one brother, Timothy (Darla) Matz of Junction City, Kansas; one brother-in-law, Timothy Paulsen; and 12 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Emil, on March 4, 2013; and one sister, Tamara Paulsen, on April 30, 2021.
Honorary bearers will be Barb’s beloved grandchildren.
Casketbearers will be Jeff Neuharth, Brad Neuharth, Mark Opp, and Johnny Schwingler of Eureka; Randy Beck of Brandon, SD; and Bruce Geist of Aberdeen.
Services are in care of Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel of Eureka.
