A 20 year old man from Pierre faces DUI, Reckless Driving and other charges after hitting a parked car in Pierre early this morning (June 7, 2023).
Police Captain Bryan Walz says shortly after midnight they received a report from the area of Dakota Avenue and Washington Avenue of a vehicle that had struck a parked car. When the responding officer arrived, Justyce Murphy said he was driving approximately 30-35 miles per hour and looking at his phone when he struck a parked car. The impact caused the parked car to be moved 30-40 feet from its original location.
While speaking with Murphy, the officer noted signs of possible impairment and Murphy admitted to consuming alcohol before the crash. Further investigation on Murphy’s ability to safely operate a vehicle was conducted. As a result, Murphy was placed under arrest charged with DUI, Reckless Driving, Using a Mobile Electronic Device While Driving, Underage Consumption of Alcohol, No Financial Responsibility and Failure to Wear a Seatbelt.
Murphy was taken to the Hughes County Jail.
