PIERRE, S.D. – Six Man Football took another step to becoming reality in South Dakota as the South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors will make an official vote on the proposal at their meeting today in Pierre. The new league of football if passed would go into effect in the 2019-2020 school year. High School Activiites Association executive assistant director John Krogstrand says as many as 40 schools have indicated an interest in going to 6 man football which is very popular in several other states, mainly Texas. There are currently seven classes of football in South Dakota, including three nine-man classes: 9AA, 9A and 9B. In the new proposal, schools with a male-only average daily membership (ADM) under 40 for grades 9-through-11 will be eligible for six-man football. The rest of the nine-man teams will be divided into two classes with the 56 and below ADM still in play. If the proposal is passed at today’s meeting, scheduling and a postseason format will be decided at the SDHSAA Board of Directors meeting in January 2019. Today’s meeting gets underway at 8:30 am at the SDHSAA building in Pierre.
