Funeral services for Gene Halvorson, 95, of Kennebec, SD will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 3, 2023 at the Kennebec Lutheran Church in Kennebec, SD with burial in the Kennebec Cemetery at Kennebec, SD. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Kennebec Lutheran Church in Kennebec, SD.

Edwin “Gene” Halvorson, 95, of Kennebec, SD, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of June 29, 2023. Gene was the oldest of the nine children born to Emel and Ruth Halvorson.
Gene joined the U.S. Navy in 1945 and was very proud to serve his country but also had a sense of humor about his time served. Shortly after arriving in Guam, the war ended; therefore, he claimed that the enemy discovered he was there and almost immediately surrendered. He would chuckle every time he told that story.
On March 1, 1948, Gene was united in marriage to Marjorie Lynette Gerard. To this union four children were born: Judith Anne, Curtis Eugene, Marsha Lynn, and Ricky Dean.
Gene was very involved in his church and community. He served and chaired several committees and boards, but the one he was proudest of was the County Board of Education. This was the board that was created to accomplish the consolidation of the schools in Lyman County. Thereafter the school became one. He felt strongly that education was important and wanted all children to have the opportunity for an outstanding education.
Gene was a farmer through and through, but that wasn’t all. In 1976, he purchased West River Oil, which included the Conoco station on the hill and it was re-named Halvorson Oil. He operated this successful business for many years all the while continuing to farm. To this day it is still owned and operated by family.
Gene was preceded in death by his oldest child Judy, youngest child Ricky, his parents, four siblings Beverly, Lyle, Wanda, and Harlan.
Gratefully sharing his life are his wife of 75 years Marge, son Curtis, his daughter Marsha, son-in-law Jerry, along with his twelve grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 15 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by four of his siblings Gary, Larry, Joyce, and Kathy.
