The chief of the Cavour Volunteer Fire Department died Monday (Sept. 4, 2023) while responding to a fire in Huron.
Huron Fire Chief Ron Hines says they were called to a fire at HURD Alignment and Service on Old Highway 14 W. He says they requested mutual aid from the Wolsey and Cavour fire departments due to the size of the blaze.
The nature of the medical emergency that affected Chief Josh Kogel has not been released, but Hines noted that the air temperature that day hovered around 100 degrees at the time they were working to extinguish the blaze. Kogel was outside of the building working with a truck when the emergency happened. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The state fire marshal is investigating the incident, which is standard in any active-duty firefighter death.
Along with the fire departments, agencies responding to the scene were the Huron Ambulance, Huron Police Department, Beadle County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Huron Public Works, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, South Dakota Fire Marshal’s Office and Beadle County Emergency Management.
