Marjorie passed away Friday, November 24, 2023, at the Avera Eureka Health Care Center.
Marjorie Lou Berndt was born November 15, 1945, in Eureka, SD to Labolt and Martha (Naasz) Berndt. The third of five children, she had many fond memories of growing up with her siblings on the family farm west of Herreid. It was there where she grew to love family, nature, and God.
Marjorie attended a country school near the family farm and Herreid High School, graduating in 1963. After high school, she attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD where she received her teaching degree and met her future husband, Kenneth Wayne Pudwill.
Marjorie and Kenny were married on June 11, 1966, at the Herreid Baptist Church. They began their teaching careers and started their family in Frederick, SD. In 1978, they moved back to Herreid to be closer to family and begin a new life farming.
Marjorie was a lifelong member of the Herreid Baptist Church. She was a dedicated Sunday School teacher and looked forward to time spent with church friends volunteering for Summer Vacation Bible School and the church Christmas program.
Marjorie will be remembered by her loved ones for her patient and kind heart, her resourceful craftiness, and for the loving home she nurtured. She always had time for others, no matter how busy the day or occasion. She was curious and creative, and loved learning new things. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking, games and puzzles, and quilting/crocheting/knitting – interests she warmly shared with her children and grandchildren. She was the ultimate do-it-yourselfer and problem solver. We recall many conversations that ended with “It’s ok, Mom/Grandma/Margie can fix it!”. She loved occasions that filled their home with family, and will be remembered for her grandma hugs, her handcrafted quilts, Halloween costumes and gifts, for incredible chicken and dumplings, and for her laughter – occasionally escalating to the point of joyful tears and ending with a sigh of “Aaahhh…. goodness!”.
Marjorie is survived by her husband Kenny and their four children: Wes (Cheryl) Pudwill – Houston, TX, Lynn Pudwill – Sioux Falls, SD, Lyle (Jill) Pudwill – Sioux Falls, SD, and Wendy (Josh) Vetter – Sioux Falls, SD; Grandchildren: Jacob Pudwill, Ethan Pudwill, Ivy Pudwill, Henry Pudwill, Grant Pudwill, Kate Vetter and Jasper Vetter; Siblings: Donna Rossow, Judy (Archie) Doering, Joy (Jim) Goehring, Steve (Wanda) Berndt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by their infant son Larry, parents Labolt and Martha Berndt, and brother-in-law Ronald Rossow.
In lieu of gifts, the family requests that memorial donations be directed to youth and education programming at the Herreid Baptist Church.
