PIERRE, S.D. – Bismarck held off the Pierre Governors throughout to earn a hard-fought win in the girls battle for the Governors Cup trophy Saturday (Dec. 30, 2023) at Riggs High Gym. The Demons led 22-17 at the half and never led by more than eight points, but they had an answer for every rally the Governors put up in a game that ultimately saw Bismarck finish with a 49-45 victory. Paige Breuer and Raya Rood combined for 26 points to lead the Demons while Ryann Barry’s 13 led Pierre. Lennix Dupris and Reese Terwilliger each added 11, but the Govs saw their four game win streak come to an end. BISMARCK, N.D. – The Pierre Governor boys basketball team outlasted the Bismarck Demons Saturday (Dec. 30, 2023) in a 78-73 win that allowed the Govs to retain the Governors Cup Trophy. Pierre scored the game’s first 11 points before the Demons found their 3-point shooting touch and took an 18-17 lead in the first half. Both teams went back and forth and were tied at 35-all at halftime, and the seesaw affair continued through the second half. Dawson Getz hit a 3-pointer with over two minutes remaining to tie the game at 73, and the Governor defense held Bismarck the rest of the way. Luke Olson scored 20 points and Getz dropped in 17 to lead the way. Jett Zabel added 16 points and 18 rebounds and also blocked a Carter Henke 3-point shot that could have tied the game at 76 in the final half-minute. Grady Swanson scored 17 and Henke 14 to lead the Demon effort. The game featured six ties and 14 lead changes overall. Pierre is now 2-1 in the renewal of the rivalry between the two Capital City high schools. Next up for the 4-2 Govs is a home game on Thursday night against Sioux Falls Lincoln, and then they’ll travel to Sioux Falls Washington on Saturday afternoon.
