The Deadwood History, Inc. (DHI) board of directors and staff are pleased to welcome Dr. Jim Williams as the executive director. Williams joined the history based organization in September 2023.
Willams is in charge of operations of the Adams Museum, Days of ‘76 Museum, Historic Adams House, Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center, The Brothel Deadwood, and the Fassbender Photographic Collection, including ten full-time and twenty part-time staff members.
Williams was Senior Vice President/Vice President at Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas, from 2004 – 2022. With roots in western and eastern South Dakota, he and his wife, Helen, have moved to Deadwood and are excited to live and be involved in the community. His extensive background in fundraising, budgeting, relationship management, team development, program development, marketing, and strategic planning will help lead and inspire the DHI team into the future.
Williams and his wife have two grown daughters, Emma and Betsey, and a Norwegian Forest cat named Duchess. They are winter activity enthusiasts who look forward to snowshoeing, hiking, and ice fishing in the Black Hills.
The DHI hiring committee included Bonny Anfinson, Pat Roberts, Ben Saylor, and Terri Keene. They understood it would be a big responsibility filling the position. Anfinson said, “Jim Williams fit all the requirements we were looking for. His qualifications and experience made him the obvious choice. It is a blessing that Jim selected Deadwood to be his home – to embrace our community and history, and lead DHI with his creative vision.”
