PIERRE – The Pierre Governor boys basketball team fell behind in the first half, but sent their fans home happy with a 53-51 come-from-behind win over Aberdeen Central Tuesday night (Jan. 23, 2024). After trailing by as many as 11 in the second quarter and 28-18 at the half, the Governors started with some hot shooting from Dawson Getz and some spectacular shot-making ability from Luke Olson to rally for the win. Getz hit three 3-points early in the third period, the last of which gave Pierre their first lead of the game at 34-33, on his way to a game-high 16 points. Pierre led 36-35 at the end of the third and then Luke Olson, one of the smallest players on the court, found ways to score among the Aberdeen bigs from close range to help the Govs hold off the Golden Eagles. Olson finished with 15 points while Jett Zabel added 13. Brenden Phillips led Aberdeen with 14 points and Jett Carlson scored 11.
Pierre improves to 8-4 with the win and hits the road Friday for an overnight trip to the Sioux Falls area, playing at Harrisburg Friday night and at O’Gorman Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 tipoff. Coverage of both games can be heard on RIVER 92-7 FM with live video available through https://drgnews.com/river.
