An interactive jigsaw puzzle event on Feb. 24, 2024, will help stave off winter isolation and boredom, while supporting the Alzheimer’s Association’s programs and research efforts. Piece Prize will host the event to connect people across the country. Television host and award-winning actor Sasha Andreev, known for his work on HGTV and Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” will host both events.
The online event will take place on Saturday, February 24, at 1 p.m. CDT. After signing up, participants will receive a jigsaw puzzle in the mail, and will connect online for 90 minutes of conversation, trivia contests, and prizes. Registration is open and more details are available at www.pieceprize.org.
Individuals or groups of friends and family are invited to register to promote brain health and raise funds to support the Association’s classes, support groups and resources for those facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Funds will also help advance research.
Piece Prize founder and jigsaw puzzle fan, Scott Mayer, came up with the event idea during the COVID-19 pandemic when he noticed an increase in puzzling among friends and family, often by themselves. “I thought, why not get all these people together, join with others and make a party out of it,” Mayer said. “Piece Prize takes a hobby and favorite pastime that people use to relax and have fun, while making it social and adding some competition.”
Studies show that activities like puzzling are important for brain health, which can help reduce cognitive decline associated with diseases like Alzheimer’s. “We’re always looking at opportunities where we can keep our minds active and reduce the risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s,” said Susan Parriott, MN-ND Chapter CEO and Region 5 Leader of the Alzheimer’s Association. “Jigsaw puzzles are one of those great exercises for the brain.”
“This all about connecting with others as a community,” Mayer added. “Our host, Sasha, is a great entertainer, and we’ll also offer prizes and fun that we think will bring people closer together, even if they are joining virtually.”
Sponsors of Piece Prize include Springbok Puzzles, Verse Chocolate and Laptop Strap.
Mayer is producing these events as Alzheimer’s Association fundraisers with Sarah Schuler, who is ranked #1 puzzler in the nation by speedpuzzler.com.
