PIERRE, SD – Donald Lungren, 88, of Pierre, SD passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024 at Peaceful Pines Assisted Living in Ft. Pierre, SD, following a brain bleed after a fall.
Donald LeRoy Lungren was born to David and Hannah (Pauley) Lungren in Vale, South Dakota on August 23, 1935. He was the first-born grandchild in the Pauley and Lungren families.
He attended and graduated from Vale High School in 1954. He continued his education at South Dakota State University with a degree in Agricultural Education and ROTC. Donald served 2 years in the United States Army in Germany.
Donald was united in marriage to Margaret Hegerfeld on April 25, 1964, in Elkton, South Dakota. No children were born to this union. Margaret passed away in 2010.
He continued his education with a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Administration from SDSU and a Doctors Degree in School Business Administration from the University of South Dakota in Vermilion, South Dakota. Donald was a school administrator in Elkton, Spearfish, Clark, Vermillion, Storm Lake, Iowa, Estherville, Iowa, and Crow Creek, South Dakota before retiring. He also worked at Hogan’s Hardware in Pierre, South Dakota, where he made many friends.
With his agronomy background, he grew a bountiful garden which he shared with neighbors and friends. He grew the biggest and best produce in the neighborhood.
Donald is survived by his siblings: Marian (Dan) Ruff of Spearfish, Jim Lungren of Rapid City, Brenda (Randy) Kolb of Watertown and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret, his parents, David and Hannah Lungren, and one nephew, Jason Kolb.
Per Donald’s wishes no funeral or memorial services will be held and his cremated remains will be buried with his wife in Elkton, SD and Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
