PIERRE, SD – Wilmer Duane “Bud” Hettinger, 87, passed away peacefully on February 18th at Avera Maryhouse in Pierre. A memorial graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:30pm(MST) on March 15th at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. Isburg Funeral Chapel of Pierre has been placed in care of the arrangements.
Bud was born on May 28, 1936, in Windsor, Colorado to Henry and Clara (Kraft) Hettinger. He grew up in Eaton, Colorado, where he attended school at Eaton High School. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
In 1953, Bud enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably from 1953-1956, which instilled in him a sense of discipline and patriotism that he carried throughout his life. Bud met Jane Nelson at UNC. They were united in marriage on June 29, 1958, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Bud worked for International Harvester and as an insurance adjuster for State Farm Insurance.
Bud was an avid fisherman and hunter. He found solace and joy in the natural beauty of his surroundings, especially when fishing. He deeply loved and supported his grandchildren, cheering from the sidelines at their sporting events or other activities they were involved in. He and Jane were passionate supporters of the Special Olympics and other organizations for individuals with disabilities.
He is survived by his son, William (Kathy) Hettinger of Pierre, SD; his daughter, Wendy (Wes) Otheim of Hartford, SD; and his brother, Bill Hettinger of Fort Collins, Colorado. He is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his beloved wife, Jane, his son Arthur, his parents, and his brother Ron.
His spirit will live on in those who knew him in the quiet moments spent fishing on the river.
