Funeral service for Phillip White Buffalo, 58, of Portland, OR and formerly of McLaughlin, SD will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 15, 2024, at the Messiah Church near Little Eagle. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM, Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the Messiah Church with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in the White Shield/Cross Bear Family Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Phillip passed away February 28, 2024, in Portland.
Phillip (Poncho) White Buffalo was born to Shirley White Buffalo and the late Phillip Looking Back in Rapid City, South Dakota
Phillip Poncho White Buffalo grew up in McLaughlin and attended grade school, in his high school years, he went to Chemawa Indian School and graduated his senior year there. After that, he joined the Navy during the Persian Gulf Era but was released because of health reasons. He then met Helen (Potts) White Buffalo and had one son, Andrew White Buffalo from Portland, Oregon. He then met the love of his life, Phyllis Stevens. They were together for 19 years. Phillip loved to travel to pow-wows and helped Phyllis with her jewelry stand. Together they raised two fur babies, Harold and Zoey, they were his favorite dog.
Phillip went to sleep on February 28, 2024, with his family beside him.
He is survived by his mother, Shirley White Buffalo (Randy Wiest) of McLaughlin, his son, Andrew White Buffalo of Portland, Oregon, two sisters, Marilyn White Shield and Prairie Rose White Buffalo of McLaughlin, the love of his life, Phyliss Stevens, his fur babies, Harold and Zoey of Portland, Oregon, two aunties, Mazie Shelton of Little Eagle and Sharon Thomas of Vancouver, British Columbia, friends from Portland, Oregon, Marcus Standing Crow and David Noyce, stepdaughter, Beyonce Nizz-Michelle Phelps, grandchildren, Marqusse & Micolle Chrispinia and Damien and Izzy White Buffalo, many nephews, Gergio (Albanin) Johnson of Portland, Oregon, Josh White Shield, Avery White Buffalo, Jaycee Walker, Nevada Walker, K’den First, Bryan Marshall of Eugene, Oregon, Skyler White Shield, Ethan Marshall of Bismarck, John Red Legs of Mobridge. Phillip is also survived by nieces, Krystal Antelope, Sheyenne Walker, Diamond Walker, Marcie Marshall all of McLaughlin, Kaitlyn New Holy, Spirite White Shield, Beth Marshall, Sewa White Shield of Bismarck and Nevaeh White Shield.
Phillip is preceded in death by his father, Phillip Looking Back, uncle, Virgil Looking Back, aunties, Christine Howard, Gladys White Shield, grandfather, Frank White Buffalo, three sisters, Melody June Good House, Valerie Ann Antelope Walker, Ruby Lynn White Shield (Stickney) and a niece, Memarie White Mountain.
