PIERRE, SD – Douglas Arthur Hillmer, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2024, at the age of 77. Memorial visitation will be on Thursday, March 7, 2024, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, with a prayer service beginning at 7:00pm, at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00pm, on Friday, March 8, 2024, at Ss Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Pierre.
Doug was born to James and Ethel (McIlravy) Hillmer on July 16, 1946, in Pierre, South Dakota, Doug’s early years were filled with the love and camaraderie of a bustling household.
Doug was fortunate to marry the love of his life, Peggy Adams, on November 16, 1968, in a beautiful ceremony in Pierre. Together, they built a life filled with joy, laughter, and the welcome chaos that comes with raising a family. Doug was a devoted father to Vance Hillmer, Nickol (Jay) Penrod, and Zachary Hillmer, and a doting grandfather to ten grandchildren: Daniel (Rebecca) Avon, Darion Hillmer, Merissa (Elliot) Hillmer, Damien (Kandace) Hillmer, Trevor (Angel) Penrod, Trinity Hillmer, Evie Klucas, Ronin Hillmer, Ruby, and Maddie. He also cherished his role as a great-grandfather to Aiyana, Apollo, and Artemis.
Doug’s legacy continues through his brother, Rex (Deb) Hillmer, and his sister, Mary Lou Stuart. He is also fondly remembered by his sisters-in-law Francie Larson, Nell Hillmer, Alice Hillmer, and a host of nieces and nephews who were touched by his humor and kindness. Doug was preceded in death by his loving parents, his mother and father-in-law Vernon and Hazel Adams, his siblings Ellis (Bev), Dale (Jo), Gary, Clyde, Ivan, Marjorie Hillmer, Dixie (Bob) King, Karen Yellow, and brother-in-law Daryll Stuart, sister-in-law Maxine Adams, along with some of his nieces and nephews.
After completing his education at TF Riggs High School in Pierre, Doug dedicated many years of service to the City of Pierre in the sanitation department. His hard work and reliability were hallmarks of his character, and he was respected by colleagues and community members alike.
Beyond his professional life, Doug was an avid outdoorsman. He found solace and joy in the serenity of fishing and the excitement of hunting. These activities were not just hobbies but were integral parts of who he was – a man deeply connected to the land and the peace it offered. Doug also cherished conversations with good friends, where his sense of humor and thoughtful nature were always on full display.
We take comfort in knowing that Doug’s journey was a remarkable one and that he has found peace. His was a life that touched many, and he leaves behind a legacy of love that will endure for generations to come. We will hold him in our hearts forever.
