The Pierre Fire Department was dispatched to a report of light smoke and a smoke detector sounding in an apartment unit at approximately 3:23 PM on Sunday, March 31, 2024. When firefighters arrived at the 300 block of West Prospect Avenue, they noted light smoke coming from one of the units on the first floor.
Firefighters started evacuation of the building as a precautionary process and made entry into the unit. They found moderate smoke conditions in the unit, and a pet dog was removed unharmed. The occupant was not home at the time of the fire.
Firefighters vented the smoke from the apartment and investigated the source. It was discovered the cause of the smoke was a smoldering blanket that fell from the back of the couch and rested on a baseboard heater.
The apartment unit had minor smoke damage and did not suffer any heat damage. The rest of the apartment complex had no damage. The occupant of the unit was able to return to their apartment.
Firefighters were on scene for approximately 1 hour. Other responders on scene included AMR and law enforcement.
