The Pierre Governors are headed to the state tournament for the first time since 2023 after beating Mitchell in games one and two of their best-of-three series. Pierre won a pitching battle in game one, and took game two in dominant fashion winning 6-2.
The final score was not a cruise to victory from start to finish for Pierre as Mitchell actually held the games first lead. A sac-fly put Mitchell in front 1-0, but come the third inning the Governors were able to punch back. Carter Schiefelbein, who was a huge factor in the Govs game one win, drove home Jerren Deal and knotted the game up.
Later in the game, the Govs took advantage of an errant pitch to jump in front for the first time. After that, they were able to blow it open. Porter Hunsley drove in a run in the inning as the Govs built their lead to three and the win felt essentially in hand thanks to how dominant Governors pitching has been of late. Will Danburg started the game for the Govs and gave them a solid six innings only giving up four hits and one earned run.
More Mitchell errors would allow Pierre to add some insurance runs before going onto win and secure their spot int he quarterfinals. Very fittingly, Hunsley was on the bump to close it out for the Govs who now wait to see who they will play on Friday. Stay tuned to the local sports page for updates.
