PIERRE, SD – Linda Nordvold,74, of Pierre formerly of Eagle Butte died on Sunday, April 28 at Avantara in Pierre. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 8th at the All-Saints Parish in Eagle Butte.
Linda Nordvold was born in Ganado, AZ on April 15th, 1950 to Jerry and Mary Ann Roan. Growing up, Linda helped out on the Roan family ranch herding sheep in Oakridge, AZ and she attended school in Fort Defiance, AZ. Linda worked in the communications industry her entire life and began her career in Arizona where she once placed a long-distance call for the movie actor, Clint Eastwood!
In 1972, Linda met her husband, Blaine Nordvold, through a blind date set up by her beloved sister, Susie Roan (who was dating Blaine’s brother, Jud, at the time). Linda and Blaine got married on December 11th, 1973. They moved to South Dakota on January 1st, 1977, after Blaine acquired a cattle loan from FHA, where they lived with Blaine’s parents, Syd and Rose, for a bit. From there they moved into a little 10’ x 12’ shack on the Blanche Tolman Ranch until they bought their first home, a trailer house, set on Abear Creek. They lived there until they were able to afford a permanent home in 1980.
Linda helped Blaine whenever she could on the ranch…fencing, feeding hay, branding cattle, etc. Though she loved horses, she was always wary around them. One time she was holding a snorty team of horses while Blaine was hooking them up to a feed wagon. The horses spooked and she held on until they jerked her off her feet. She let go and never helped Blaine hitch up again! She enjoyed helping Blaine with the Fox Ridge Trail Ride, often times helping with the cooking then going on to work, then back again to do more cooking.
Linda began working for the CRST Telephone Authority in 1977. She was a dedicated Billing Clerk for several years, rarely taking a day off…even if her kids called her multiple times a day about non-existent tornadoes or the many squabbles they got into. She also served as the secretary/treasurer for the CRST Telephone Authority Employees Association. During her time at CRST Telephone Authority, she was awarded “Employee of the Year” twice. One of those awards included a trip to Orlando, FL to attend the National Telephone Convention, which she really enjoyed. Linda enjoyed working for the CRST Telephone Authority, enjoyed attending the annual Christmas parties, and had a special place in her heart for all her co-workers. She retired in 2016.
Linda enjoyed attending C-EB and Dupree basketball games, was an avid fan of the girls and boys’ basketball teams. She wore out many a vehicle traveling to and from work, to and from games, and on trips to visit family in Arizona. One of Blaine’s favorite memories of Linda is that before they met, she had bought a new car, a stick shift Volkswagen Beetle, and hadn’t even learned to drive yet! Linda was also an avid fan of the Professional Bull Riders Association (PBR). Her favorite bull riders were Adriano Moraes, Guilherme Marchi, JW Hart. She also loved listening to grandson, Melvin, play his guitar and loved granddaughter, April’s, artwork. Linda enjoyed country music, sewing, and occasionally beading, and a clean house and vehicle. She’d often get after daughter Cody for having a messy vehicle saying, “People look at your vehicle and think your house is the same” (which it wasn’t).
Above all, Linda loved being around family. She tried to make yearly trips to Arizona to visit her family there and talk Navajo (her first language). She was the most loving, generous, and supportive wife and mother and had a particularly special bond with grandkids Melvin and April; niece Stacie Nordvold & kids Bryce, Tigh, Jud, Syd; nephew Kelcey Nordvold (Whitney) & kids Gunner, Aksel, Aquila, Uriah, Vronti, Brazos; Great-grandson, Preston; and fur-babies Bluejeans and Boots. She will be deeply, deeply missed.
