MAY 22, 2024, UPDATE:
For the third time in less than 24 hours, emergency responders in Pierre and Fort Pierre were called to the scene of a punctured natural gas line.
About mid-morning Tuesday (May 21, 2024), the Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department was called to a location on Sale Barn Road. A fence was being built around Sioux Nation’s yard, when the 4-inch gas line was hit.
Then in the noon hour Tuesday while repairs were still taking place in Fort Pierre, the Pierre Volunteer Fire Department was called to the site of a 4-inch gas line that had been hit at the Grandview Addition along Highway 14.
Monday afternoon (May 20, 2024), residences within a block of the intersection of Oneida Avenue and Capitol Avenue in Pierre were evacuated for a short period of time after a contractor punctured a natural gas line.
Firefighters were on the scene of each incident for a few hours to monitor the air for the presence of natural gas. Montana-Dakota Utilities arrived to repair the leaks and there were no injuries.

MAY 20, 2024:
Residences within a block of the intersection of Oneida Avenue and Capitol Avenue in Pierre were evacuated around 3 o’clock this afternoon (May 20, 2024) after a contractor punctured a natural gas line.
Trevor Lightfield with the Pierre Rescue Squad says people were allowed back in their homes after about half an hour, but work to fix the punctured gas line will likely take until around 5:30pm.
Anyone living near the intersection of Oneida and Capital avenues in Pierre that may be concerned about natural gas being in their home should contact Montana-Dakota Utilities at 1-800-MDU-FAST.
