MAY 24, 2024:
The newly renovated, historic Verendrye Museum in Fort Pierre is now open for the summer (May 24, 2024).
Museum Board President Deb Schiefelbein says the museum building, which is now owned by the city of Fort Pierre, was built in 1967.
Schiefelbein says there are some new displays.
During the renovation that started in 2018, volunteers came across a lot of photos, but were unable to identify the individuals in them. Schiefelbein says people are welcome to choose any pictures from the pile they would like and take them home.
Schiefelbein says the Verendrye Museum also supports four other historic locations in Fort Pierre.
The five museums are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The hours are Monday through Saturday from 9AM-4PM CT, and Sundays from 11AM-4PM.

A ribbon cutting and open house at the historic Verendrye Museum in Fort Pierre is being held Friday (May 24, 2024) at 10am CT.
Museum Board President Deb Schiefelbein says they’re celebrating the completion of a remodel and renovation project that started in 2018.
Schiefelbein says this winter they worked on the 70 foot long, 8 foot tall display that’s inside.
Schiefelbein says during the renovation, volunteers came across group photos, but were unable to identify the individuals in them. She says people are welcome to choose any pictures they would like and take them home.
The open house also kicks off the Verendrye Museum’s summer hours, as well as the hours at the four other historic locations supported by the museum. Those are the Depot Museum, the Stanley County 1905 Jail, the Sansarc Country School Museum, and the Log Cabin Visitor Museum. They will be open Monday through Saturday from 9AM-4PM Central, and from 11AM-4PM on Sundays.
