Jerry West meant more to the NBA than just his Hall of Fame accolades. He was, literally and figuratively, the brand of the league. So much so, West was the inspiration for the silhouette you see in the NBA logo today. West, who became a legendary front-office executive after his illustrious playing career, died at the age of 86, reported by the Los Angeles Clippers today.
“Jerry West, the personification of basketball excellence and a friend to all who knew him, passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 86,” the team said. “His wife, Karen, was by his side.” West finished his playing career averaging 27 points, 6.7 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game. Only Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor had higher averages (among retired players). West averaged 29.1 points per game in the playoffs, only MJ had a higher average.
