LAS VEGAS, NV – Michael H. Zakahi, 65, of Las Vegas, NV, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2024. Born on June 21, 1959, in Sioux Falls, SD, Michael was the cherished son of Dr. Raymond J. and Nylada Zakahi. He spent his formative years growing up in Pierre.
On September 4, 1982, Michael married the love of his life, Julie Jorgenson, and embraced her son Joshua Lee as his own through adoption on October 22, 1982. The couple’s joy doubled with the arrival of their son Raymond Michael in 1984. Michael was a devoted husband and father, always putting his family first and instilling in them the values of love, kindness, and hard work.
Michael began his career in Pierre, working at various establishments including Holiday Haus, Mike’s Place, Elks Lodge, and the Ramkota in Nebraska. His professional journey led him to the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, NV, where he honed his skills in the hospitality industry. Michael later became the General Manager of the Willits General Store in Basalt, CO, before returning to Las Vegas in 2017. There, he continued his career with Boyd Properties at the Fremont Hotel & Casino and Tony Roma’s, eventually transferring to the Cannery to serve as the Room Chef at Carve Steakhouse. Michael also dedicated five years as the maintenance man for his community, always ready to lend a hand.
Michael’s passions extended beyond his professional life. He was an avid cook, often delighting family and friends with his culinary creations. Golfing was another of his favorite pastimes, providing him with both relaxation and a way to connect with others. Above all, Michael was known for his generosity and willingness to help those in need, a trait that endeared him to many.
Michael is survived by his wife, Julie, of Las Vegas, NV; sons Joshua Lee (Amy) of Corpus Christi, TX, and Raymond (CJ) of Davenport, Iowa; grandsons Matthew Roberts and Mason Zakahi of TX; sister Aurora (Gene) Nelson of Sioux Falls, SD; brothers Dr. Walter (Catharine) of IL and Cesar of Las Vegas, NV; nieces Naomi Zakahi of Japan and Elizabeth Determan of Boston; nephews Philip (Beti) Zakahi and family of NYC and Jonathon Determan of Sioux Falls, SD; stepmother Karen Zakahi of Pierre, SD; stepsister Kathy (Brian) Walz of Pierre, SD; and stepbrothers Brad (Ashley) Christenson and family of Aberdeen and Brian (Kate) Christenson and family of FL. Preceding him in death were his parents, Dr. Raymond and Nylada, and his sister Hyrma. Michael’s presence will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Burial services will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Pierre on Friday, September 13, 2024 at 10:00am.
