PIERRE, SD – Marlene Uhrig, 88, of Pierre, SD, died on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Avera Maryhouse, surrounded by her family. Visitation will be from 5:30pm until 7:30pm, on Thursday, October 10th at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Funeral services will be at 11:00am on Friday, October 11th at Lutheran Memorial Church with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.
Marlene was born to William “Thomas” and Ruth Irene (Loy) Scoular on March 15, 1936, in Lemmon, SD, Marlene’s feisty spirit brought joy to all who knew her throughout her 88 years.
Marlene’s early years were spent in her hometown community of Lemmon. After graduating from Lemmon High School in 1954, she furthered her education at Black Hills Teacher’s College in Spearfish, SD, earning her teaching certificate and taught school for one year.
Marlene married the love of her life Jimmie “Jim” Uhrig on March 19, 1936. Together they had two children LeRoy and Pam. Jim and Marlene lived in Morristown, McIntosh, Rapid City and Deerfield, SD before moving to Pierre, SD in 1959 so Jim could work on building the Oahe Dam. Marlene began her 31 year career with the State of South Dakota in the Social Services “Economic Assistance” department. At the age of 55, Marlene retired and began working part time for state of South Dakota as a case worker for Energy Assistance for three seasons.
Marlene was an active member of the VFW Post 2038 Auxiliary, Election Board for City of Pierre for 23 years.
Marlene enjoyed traveling, reading books, playing dice, card games and bingo, making afghans, and caramel puff corn. She loved collecting Guardian Angels, her Black Hills Gold jewelry and red beers. She showed her sense of humor by wrapping her family’s gifts in Walmart or Menard bags tying them up and writing their names with a black marker. She appreciated her trips to the Capitol every year to see the beautiful Christmas trees.
Marlene is survived by her husband Jimmie “Jim” Uhrig, her children LeRoy (Vicki) Uhrig and Pam Middleton both of Pierre, SD, her grandchildren Shelby (Chad) DeVries of Sioux Falls, SD, Chad (Amy) Uhrig of Ft. Pierre, SD, Deserae (Art) Flaaen of Pierre, SD, Ross (Jana) Uhrig of Pierre, SD, and her great grandchildren Corbin, Austin, Reece, Sydney, Gable, Jace, Finn, Andi, Dalton, Paige, Temperance, Tor, Sterling and Boone. She is also survived by her brother Eugene Scoular of Pasadena, CA, her brother in law Bill (Tina) Uhrig of Lincoln, NE, her sister in law Joan Sharp-Russell of Rapid City, SD, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents William “Thomas” and Ruth Irene (Loy) Scoular, her brothers Duane (Marie) Scoular, Ralph (Hazel) Scoular, Harold (Irene) Scoular, her sisters Janet Welch and Betty (Paul) Coddington, her brothers in law Edmund “Ed” (Dolly) Uhrig, Henry “Hank” (Sissy) Uhrig, John Uhrig, Elton “Al” (Agnes “Aggie”) Alfred “Skeeze” Uhrig, Marian “Mike” (Sarah) Uhrig, her sisters in law Elaine “Sis” (Bud) O’Donnell, Shirlene “Tootie” (Ron) Piekkola, and Myra Jane “Baby” (Larry) Licking, her grandson Thomas “Tom” Middleton and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
