(AP)/DRG Media Group– Almost 90% of the votes are counted and it appears South Dakota voters have said “no” to an abortion rights measure that would have amended the state’s constitution.
Unofficial numbers show the opposition leading 60% to 40%, early Wednesday morning (Nov. 6, 2024).
The South Dakota measure would have barred restrictions on terminating a pregnancy during its first 12 weeks. From the 13th through the 26th week of pregnancy, state regulations would have allowed the medical procedure if it was “reasonably related” to the patient’s physical health. After the 26th week, abortions would be allowed only to preserve a patient’s life or health.
The ban has been in place since the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturning Roe vs. Wade in June 2022 made it a felony to perform an abortion, except to save the life of the patient.
