In game one of this doubleheader, there was one key theme that stood out amongst all else on the stat sheet… Free throws. We’ll get to that in a moment.
The Spartans went on an 11-0 run to close out the first quarter leading 15-8. In the first half, the Spartans hit four three-pointers and would take a 33-19 lead into the break. But the Rustlers came out of the half hot, hitting a barrage of threes to cut the deficit to six. Miller kept trying to chip away in the fourth quarter, but when it was all said and done the Spartans would go onto win 61-53. The reason they were able to hold off Miller? Wessington Springs went 22-of-24 from the free throw line. Darren Boyle, who was on the call, says, “It was astonishing, that’s why free throws are free!”
In game two, it was equally as exciting as Wessington Springs made it a sweep of the Rustlers, winning the boys game 66-52 and improving to 11-1. The Spartans were led by Parker Graff who went unconscious scoring 31 with five threes. The Spartans also had a nice night from Colby Flowers who scored 13.
