Two of Pierre’s most valuable student-athletes were celebrated today as Ty Mikel and George Stalley signed their commitment letters to play football at the collegiate level. Both Stalley and Mikel were critical pieces in the numerous State Championship seasons the Govs enjoyed over the past few seasons. Mikel thought today would just be a few friends and a plate of cookies, but the Riggs Library was packed out to the hallway as students, teammates and family members of both Mikel and Stalley gathered for the special occasion.

Mikel was one of Pierre’s most dominant forces up front, elevating himself as one of the state’s most dominant lineman. Stalley was not only an outstanding receiver, but also a great special teams player who often used his speed to pick defenses and special teams units apart. Both created lasting memories alongside each other at Hollister Field, and on fields across South Dakota.

Mikel and Stalley both signed together, Mikel signing with Northern State and Stalley signing with SMSU. We asked Ty Mikel what this day meant to him, here is what he had to say:
Mikel was joined by his parents, Jeff and Rebecca, and his brother, Tug, who were beaming with pride as he signed his name on the dotted line. He and his family are pictured below:

We were also able to catch up with Stalley, who was equally as excited about this huge accomplishment to the point he could not wipe the smile off his face.
George was also joined by his family pictured below, including his father Bob and his mother Jennifer:

Head coach Steve Steele spoke about his two (now former) players, talking about what they meant to the team as not only players, but more importantly leaders.
Steele also spoke about how much Ty and George will be missed within the program moving forward, but also how excited he is to watch these two young men continue their playing careers at the next level. Congratulations to both Ty, George and their families on such a rewarding day.
