Coming into a Monday night game inside Aberdeen’s Civic Arena, the Mobridge-Pollock boys basketball team was riding high with a five-game win streak. They had a close call last week at Belle Fourche, but were able to weather that storm and come out on top. In their game against Aberdeen Christian, however, this was not the case as the Tigers fell to the Knights 55-47. For the second game in a row, Mobridge-Pollock had a slow start offensively. On Monday, they eked out nine points in the opening quarter. Down six going into the second, the Tigers would draw inside of a possession deficit, but the Knights went into the break ahead by four.
The margins were similarly close in the second half, with Aberdeen Christian outscoring the Tigers by two points in each of the final two quarters. Another tough night shooting the ball from the outside led Mobridge-Pollock to lean more on senior Shane Henderson, especially in the second half. Despite the Knights covering him up with two, and sometimes three defenders, the Tigers still sought to give him the ball inside. Henderson finished with a team-high 16 points, but the strategy yielded some turnovers as well with Aberdeen Christian intercepting passes intended for him.
Our player of the game went to Knights sophomore forward Brooks Jett, who dominated with 21 points and was a force on the glass all night. Aberdeen Christian was much taller than the typical class-B team, and the 6’5″ Jett is where that list begins. They improve to 11-4, nearing the top seed in 1B, and drop Mobridge-Pollock to 10-4. The defeat is the Tigers first since January 9, when they fell on the road to Miller in a close game. As it stands, their remaining six games all come against teams with a winning record, which begins Thursday in Mobridge against Sully Buttes.
