The Govs girls made the two-hour road trip east to Huron for a crucial regular season matchup as the season winds down. Both teams came into the game with 7 wins, jockeying for poll position come postseason, so this game had major playoff implications. It was clear the Govs got off the bus ready to play as they finished the first quarter up 15-1 thanks to their trademark defense generating 4 first quarter steals. The Tigers were able to find their footing in the second quarter as Aly Davis started to hit some shots, but the shots were also falling for the Govs as they took a 37-15 lead into the half. The roles reversed in the third quarter as the Tigers started the second half with an 11-2 run cutting down the deficit, but Gracelyn Taylor facilitated three more steals in the second half and the Govs cruised to a 63-35 win and improved to 8-6. Addison Soma finished with 11-points, Emery Larson with 13 and Gracelyn Taylor with 10. But it was Taylor’s six steals and great defense that earned her the Baumann Lumber Player of the Game. The Govs are now off for over a week as they get set for one of their biggest games of the season against 12-3 Mitchell next Friday at home.
The Huron Tigers displayed the more consistent offensive effort Tuesday night in a 60-50 boys basketball win over the Pierre Governors at the Riggs High Gym. Huron used a 32-18 scoring advantage in the middle quarters to take control, but had to fight off a Governor rally to preserve the win. Blake Ellwein scored 24 points including four of his team’s nine 3-pointers to lead the way, and Davis Chase added 17 off the bench. Meanwhile the Tiger defense neutralized Luke Olson and Dawson Getz, Pierre’s primary scoring threats, and held them to just eight points apiece. Lincoln Dilges did his best to keep the Govs close, scoring a career high 21 in the loss. Another competitive effort against a higher rated team, but the loss drops Pierre to 5-9 on the season. And it doesn’t get any easier in their next matchup, as they head to Sioux Falls to battle the 14-1 Lincoln Patriots Saturday afternoon.
