ABERDEEN, S.D. – For the first time since girls wrestling began in South Dakota, Region Tournaments were conducted with berths in the State Individual Tournament on the line last night. The Pierre Governors earned yet another tournament victory as they amassed 225.5 points in winning the first Region 3A Tournament. Aberdeen Central came in second with 172.5 while Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon put 147.0 points to take third out of 15 teams in the region. Pierre qualified 11 of 12 wrestlers for the State Tournament including four region champions – Dani Ringstmeyer, Lexie Hillmer, Kezrey Benning and Abbi Lewis – in addition to four runners-up. Wrestlers who place in the top four in their brackets advance to State, while fifth place finishers await as alternates. Among other Central SD teams, Miller/Highmore-Harrold placed fifth with 88.0 points and advanced four wrestlers to State. Wessington Springs and Todd County also advanced one wrestler apiece. The boys wrestling Region Tournaments will be held Saturday with report coverage throughout the day on KGFX – 1060 AM/103.1 FM. The three-day State Tournament will be next weekend in Rapid City.
