Maegan Aniya Callahan, a cherished daughter, beloved family member, and an inspiration to all who knew her, passed away surrounded by love and warmth. Born on December 8, 2007, in Pierre, South Dakota, to proud parents Brinton Callahan and Joelle ScaresHawk, Maegan’s vibrant spirit and infectious smile brought joy to everyone she encountered.
Growing up in Pierre, Maegan’s early years were filled with the simple pleasures of childhood. She attended local elementary schools and was a student at Georgia Morse Middle School. It was during these formative years that Maegan faced one of her greatest challenges, a diagnosis of cancer. Despite this, her indomitable spirit never waned, and she continued to embrace life with courage and positivity.
The bond between Maegan and her father, Brinton, was a testament to the power of love and family. Their connection was a source of strength and comfort throughout her journey. When Hayley Adams entered their lives, she quickly became an integral part of Maegan’s world to the extent that Maegan would come to call her mom. The trio shared countless moments of laughter and joy, often staying up late to play video games and create cherished memories.
Maegan’s zest for life extended to her culinary delights. She had an affinity for Domino’s pizza and reveled in the comfort of Chicken noodles and dumplings with mashed potatoes lovingly prepared by her Nana. Aunt Wendy’s Potato Soup was another favorite, and Maegan’s fondness Guadalajara’s made it favorite dining spot even though she’d only order chicken strips. Her love for food was matched only by her passion for the outdoors. Camping trips with Nana and Papa were adventures she looked forward to, and she could often be found swimming alongside Max, the family dog, or with her cousins.
Holidays were a special time for Maegan, as she would join her Nana in the kitchen to bake cookies, filling the home with the sweet aroma of love and tradition. Her close relationship with the Militiamen VMC brought additional joy to her life. The group’s dedication to Maegan was evident through their poker runs, which raised funds to support her treatment and brought smiles to her face even on the toughest days. Their presence at her birthday parties and unwavering support during her travels for treatment from Pierre to Sioux Falls were a testament to that community’s love for Maegan.
Maegan’s desire to make the world a better place shone through in everything she did. Even in the face of illness, she was always eager to help others, and her sense of humor remained intact until the very end. Her legacy is one of resilience, kindness, and the power of human connection.
Maegan’s memory will forever be cherished by her father, Brinton, her “mom” Hayley, her grandparents, Joe and Sue Trujillo, Danny and Cheryl Adams, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings who were blessed to know her. She is now an angel watching over her Nana and Papa, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter. Preceded in death by her great-grandparents Dale and Maxine Morford and her great-grandmother Francis Trujillo, Maegan’s spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to be touched by her life.
