April 25, 2025:
Pierre T.F. Riggs High School senior Magnus Weber from Pierre has earned 1st place in the 2025 Congressional Art Competition for South Dakota.
Weber’s drawing, “Fragments of Freedom,” is a pen and ink abstract piece. It will be on display in the Cannon Tunnel at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., for the coming year, alongside the winning artwork from other congressional districts. Weber’s art teacher is Jill Kokesh.

Second place was awarded to Katherine Kretchman, a senior who is home-schooled. Her artwork, an oil on canvas piece, will be displayed in U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson’s Washington, D.C. office for the next year.

Johnson says he’s “always amazed by the talent of South Dakota’s young artists. The submissions we received showcase their skills and creativity. Congratulations to Magnus and Katherine – your art will represent South Dakota well in Congress.”
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 and is sponsored by the members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The South Dakota Arts Council partners with Johnson’s office to carry out this initiative.
March 2025:
South Dakota high school students have until midnight on April 15, 2025, to submit their original artwork for the 2025 Congressional Art Competition.
The contest is open to all South Dakota students in grades 9-12. Only digital submissions will be accepted. The first-place winning entry will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the United States Capitol for one year. The second-place winning entry will be displayed in U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson’s Washington, D.C. office for one year.
Students should send one email including a high-resolution JPEG image, along with a completed, typed PDF of the student release form to rebecca.cruse@state.sd.us.

Winners will be notified by April 17, 2025,and will be responsible for shipping their artwork and student release forms to the South Dakota Arts Council office. SDAC will have the artwork framed and shipped it to Washington, D.C..
