South Dakota farmers grew 3900 acres of industrial hemp in open areas in 2024, a 22% increase from the year before.
According to U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service data, 3700 of those acres were harvested, up 28% from 2023.
In North Dakota, industrial hemp grown in open areas in 2024 totaled 850 acres, up 15%, with 760 of those acres being harvested, up 4% from the previous year.
Industrial hemp grown under protection in North Dakota totaled 11,326 square feet, an increase of around 21% (or 2399 square feet) from 2023.
Nationally in 2024, 45,294 acres of industrial hemp were grown in the open, up 64%. Area harvested in the open for all purposes totaled 32,694 acres, up 55% from 2023. The total value of hemp production in the open was $417 million, up 46%, while the combined value of hemp production in the open and hemp production under protection was $445 million, up 40%.
Floral hemp has emerged as the industry’s driving force with production at 20.8 million pounds, a 159% increase over the previous year. Harvested area of floral hemp in the open was 11,827 acres, up 60%. Average per acre yield per acre for floral hemp in the open went up by 669 pounds to reach 1,757 pounds per acre.
