Three towns in central South Dakota have been awarded grants to purchase traffic control devices.
Burke, Murdo and Platte will be reimbursed up to $2,500 for the devices they purchase, which include:
- Burke – Radar speed signs to assist in speed enforcement along the portion of US Highway 18 that runs through town.
- Murdo – Flashing solar stop signs at the four-way stop at the intersection approach of US Highway 83 and Interstate 90 Exit 192 to alert traffic to stop to provide safety for motorists and pedestrians.
- Platte – Solar radar speed signs in areas of high pedestrian and cyclist traffic along the Highway 44/Highway 45 corridor.
Crooks, located in the southeast part of the state near Sioux Falls, was also awarded a grant. That town will buy portable solar radar speed signs to increase awareness of speed limits in areas with high pedestrian and bicycle traffic along the shoulder.
The Traffic Control Device Grant dollars come from the South Dakota Municipal Street Maintenance Association. Established in 2022, the annual grants provide funds to offset the cost of traffic control devices such as speed display units, traffic count units and other flashing warning signs for pedestrians.
The SDMSMA is an affiliate of the South Dakota Municipal League. For more information on the association, visit www.sdmunicipalleague.org/StreetMaintenance.
