Martha Lena Diede was born on December 13, 1932, in Huron, South Dakota, to Christ and Lydia (Huber) Diede. She grew up on a farm near Alpena and attended country school through the eighth grade. As the fourth of thirteen children, Martha played a vital role in helping care for her siblings, especially after the passing of her mother, Lydia, in 1952 due to stomach cancer.
On July 5, 1952, Martha married Richard Lambert in Huron. They made their home in Alpena, where they lived for 63 years and raised their only child, Linda, born on March 21, 1957. Martha and Richard celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2012, just months before Richard’s passing that November.
Martha was known for her generosity and nurturing spirit. She spent many years doing housework and babysitting for others and often cared for her sister Alvina during illness. She was especially beloved for her homemade pickles and kuchens, her fondness for Molly B polka music, her love of gardening and puzzles, and her occasional enjoyment of a Miller Lite. Martha had a gift for hospitality, she treated everyone like family and always had snacks ready for visitors.
In 2016, Martha moved to Faulkton to be closer to her granddaughter, continuing to share her warmth and kindness with those around her.
Martha’s life will forever be cherished by her grandchildren: Stacy (Shane) Machtemes, Faulkton, Jon (Sarah) Small, Brandon, and Cody (Jaclyn) Small, Harrisburg; great grandchildren: Logan (Ashley), Taylor (Colton Rall) and Trey Machtemes, Emilee, Karlee, & Tucker, Small, and Lennan, Kensington, and Breslyn Small; great-great grandchild: Paxton Machtemes; brother, Jake (Arlene) Diede, Everett, WA; sister, Carol North, Huron; sister-in-law, Julia Diede, Redfield; brothers-in-law: Doug Lambert, Wisconsin and Glen Lambert, Minneapolis, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
