It’s officially playoff baseball time for the Pierre Governors who wrapped up the regular season a week ago with a solid showing in back-to-back doubleheaders, going 3-1. Pierre will play in a best-of-three series all jammed in today due to the rain throughout the week, posing an interesting scenario. Should games one and two get split, you face a triple-header which can be a strenuous day on the diamond.
With their 3-1 closeout of the regualr season, the Govs went 17-6 on in their 23 game season. That was good enough to earn them the five-seed in these playoffs. Their opponent, Watertown, broke even going 9-9 slotting them in the 12-seed. However, as is true in most sports, teams that come from AA schools should not be taken lightly no matter what their record.
To throw another curveball into this matchup (no pun intended), Watertown eliminated Pierre just one year ago, and hopes to pull off the upset and do it again. To do that, they will need a good performance from their ace, Kaden Rylance, who is highly regarded as one of the top arms in South Dakota. While the Govs boast a pretty sharp rotation themselves, it is likely this series could require all three games.
First pitch today is set for 11:00 AM with the rest of the games to follow as needed. Stay tuned to the local sports page for updates.
