The State Track & Field Meet in Sioux Falls brings out the best in the athletes competing each and every year. Howard Wood Field packs out with fans from across the state and it creates one of the most electric atmospheres for a high school sporting event you can find in South Dakota. It’s the top talent from around the state all converging on the year’s most important event, and the Govs girls 4×200 relay harnessed that energy and used it to shatter a South Dakota all-time record.
Emlyn Swanson, Charlee Williams-Smith, Kali Ringstmeyer and Lennix DuPris made up the Govs foursome yesterday, and they had the race won after the first two legs. However, as the baton was passed the Govs started to shift their focus from winning the race to making history. Roy Swanson captured the moment the Govs crossed the finish line and etched their name into the history books:
As Ringstmeyer made the final turn down the stretch, the crowd could sense history was happening. Once she crossed the finish line, it was official. The Govs set the all-time South Dakota record for this event with a time of 1:40.11.

Below are the record times held previous in years past:

The Govs and the rest of the teams competing will continue chasing history today, and you can hear Brian Oakland’s reports on KMLO and KPLO throughout the day. To see the full list of results from each class, click here
