It has not been the start to the second half of the season the Minnesota Twins were looking for. They dropped their first series out of the All-Star break to the Rockies, who are widely considered as one of the worst teams in baseball and maybe even in MLB history. Then, they dropped their following series to the Los Angeles Dodgers who, even with the Dodger name, have been playing uncharacteristically bad this year. They would follow that up by dropping two out of three to the last place Washington Nationals, and starting the second half 0-3 in series played. Losing two of those three series to last place teams is not exactly what Minnesota envisioned out of the gate.
Last night, the Twins were on the brink of starting off their series with the Red Sox with a loss. After a lengthy, 90-minute rain delay, Minnesota gave up a Roman Anthony RBI single which put the Red Sox ahead 4-3 in the ninth. It looked grim for Minnesota who was hoping to avoid falling behind in yet another series, but they put a few runners on base and started to threaten. After a ground ball to third that was fired home to retire the possible tying run, Brooks Lee roped one into the outfield that scored Willi Castro and Mickey Gasper to give the Twins a much needed win. The Twins took the game 5-4 and took the series lead.
The Twins improved to 51-55 with the win, but still sit in fourth place in the AL Central. Minnesota will try to snap their series losing streak tonight at 6:40 PM CT against the Red Sox on KGFX 1060 AM and 103.1 FM in the Pierre area.
