Correne Elizabeth Vickmark Petersen was born on July 24, 1930 to Obed and Lillian Vickmark in Madison, SD. She grew up in Madison in a large family the 5th of 9 children. She graduated from Madison Central High School in the class of 1948. Later she would move to Pierre, SD where she met William “Bill” C. Petersen. They were married on Nov. 27th, 1954. They then moved around some before coming back to settle in Pierre in 1964 with 4 children; Kristi, Cheri, Eric and Karlah.
Correne loved being a devoted wife and mother working hard to create a good homelife, cooking wonderful meals – always with dessert! And taking good care of their home and children. On holidays they would pack up the car and kids and go to enjoy Big Holiday Celebrations with all of Correne’s family! Oh what fun! She loved spending time with her family! Lots of laughter and a little chaos. Later she loved caring for and doting on her grandchildren.
When her kids were all school age she expanded her heart and home they became foster parents for a few years. They gave respite care to several children giving love and care to each one.
In the early 70’s she began working as a teacher’s aide eventually becoming a library aide at the Pierre Junior High. She had many duties but her favorite was working and interacting with the students, library assistants and Mrs. Brown. She cared soo much for the students and always wanted to encourage them to believe in themselves.
One of her favorite pastimes was going to McDonald’s with her husband for afternoon coffee everyday for many years! She liked the interaction with the employees and friends they’d run into. And she insisted on taking pictures of her grandkids on Ronald’s lap every year to track their growth. When they were going to remodel without Ronald she asked if she could have him on her porch, but she didn’t get him.
A few years after retirement from school she began working part time at Walmart in the craft and fabric department. She wanted electronics because she loved working with computers but having been a craft person they needed her there. She liked working with her customers and was appreciated for her meticulous care for her dept. She liked working at Walmart, they treated her well and she took pride in working there 10+ years.
She was a woman of God loving Jesus Christ! Her greatest desire was for her entire family to know and have a relationship with Jesus for themselves. She always ended every conversationgoodbye with God Bless You!
There’s so many things that could be said but one thing you can always say about Correne is she always tried to make things better!
She was preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings, her cherished husband Bill, her daughter Kristi, son in law Robert and grandchildren Nicole and Matthew. She leaves behind a legacy of love and faith.
