PIERRE, SD – Amy Jean Mouw Smith 85 passed away October 16, 2025 at Avera St. Mary’s Mary House in Pierre South Dakota.
Amy was born September 6, 1940 to Charles “Tracy” and Edith Hodge Mouw on their farmstead near Ellendale, North Dakota.
She attended school in Kenter, ND. Graduated high school in Ellendale, North Dakota and attended college at the University of North Dakota Ellendale branch.
She met Willis Smith in Aberdeen, South Dakota when she worked at Northern university in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They married on June 29, 1962 in Ellendale, North Dakota. From this union, they had three children, Shauna, Jodi, and Steven.
She worked as a deputy special officer for the bureau of Indian affairs in Ft. Yates, North Dakota.
She worked 32 years for the state of South Dakota . She retired as a certified employment specialist at the rehabilitation center for the blind. After retirement she worked part-time for project CAR in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Charter president of the Pierre Lionesses club, served for the boards of the state and regional rehabilitation Association and association for the blind and greater South Dakota placement .
She loved her children, her home in Pierre and making beautiful keepsakes. Her hobbies included quilting, gardening, collecting owls, genealogy, embroidery, crocheting, and knitting.
She will be forever cherished by her family; Shauna(Kevin) Swanson, Jodi(Reid) Widvey, Steven Smith, grandson Blake(Logan) Widvey, brother John (Judy) Mouw, sister Ruth Jensen and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Edith Mouw, sisters Dorothy Brown, Carol Bersick, niece Valerie Bersick and her special puppy companions Benjamin and Timmy.

Burial will be at her family’s plot in Ellendale North Dakota.
