The Heisman Trophy winner and national champion quarterback Fernando Mendoza is entering the NFL Draft.
Mendoza and the Hoosiers beat Miami on Monday night to complete the perfect season, and he did so in front of numerous Las Vegas Raiders executives as reported by Pete Thamel. The Raiders own the first pick in next years draft.
Mendoza showed off his toughness in the championship bout taking an early shot to the facemask that drew some blood from his lip. He further proved his grit with a fourth down touchdown run where he bounced off of multiple tacklers before diving in for what would be the game-winning score.
Mendoza completed nearly 75% of his passes for 555 yards with eight touchdown passes, one touchdown run and zero turnovers in the playoff. He was 14 of 16 with three touchdowns in the 38-3 rout of Alabama and 17 of 20 with five touchdowns in the 56-22 blowout of Oregon.
Indiana finished 16-0 — using the extra games afforded by the expanded 12-team playoff to match a perfect-season win total last compiled by Yale in 1894.
