The Stanley County Lady Buffaloes have played some incredibly close contests this season, coming up just short of wins on multiple different occasions. But head coach Chris Fosheim knew that a win was coming. He didn’t know when, but he knew if his girls stayed the course that they would reap the rewards. Last night, they did just that.
The Lady Buffaloes travelled east to take on the Lady Chieftains who were looking to snap a three-game losing streak of their own. The game started with a lot of defense with both teams generating steals and making it difficult to find open shots. The games first bucket didn’t come until about halfway through the first quarter. However, when the first shot fell, they all started to fall. Instantly both offenses flipped the switch and started to light up the scoreboard as the Lady Buffaloes took an 18-15 lead into the half.
After a turnover-ridden second quarter, Stanley County cleaned it up on offense as they got big buckets from Addy Deal and JoRayah Walker to stretch the small lead to four going into the fourth. The Lady Buffaloes had struggled to close out close games throughout the season, but they were determined not to let this one slip away. Stanley County earned some free throws late and took advantage, capping off a 12-14 night from the line. The Lady Buffaloes took a 45-38 lead and held on for their first win. The Lady Buffaloes went straight into the locker room to celebrate, when Fosheim arrived to greet his team after the victory, he described it as “emotional, happy tears”. Addy Deal finsihed the game with an 16 points and earned Player of the Game honors.
The Buffalo boys were on a mission of their own which was to make a statement after their loss to Sully Buttes earlier this week. They came out red-hot with Eddie Duffy taking commanding control of the offense. A flurry of early buckets from Duffy got Stanley County out in front by double-digits, but Crow Creek would answer with a few strong buckets from Justin St. John and Domitrious St. Pierre from outside the arc, but the Buffaloes offense was simply too much.
Throughout the game, Teegyn Breitag established his presence in the paint, scoring 10 points in the first half followed by a 14 point performance in the second half. Stanley County would stretch the lead out enough to institute the running clock en route to their 81-45 win, their 11th on the season.
