Lane R. Costales, 58, of Lebanon, SD, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at his home.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg, with Fr. Brian Simon presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lebanon.
Lane was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Dayle Costales and Alonzo Costales. He spent his early years in Albuquerque before moving to Colorado, where he attended high school in Aurora. Later in life, Lane settled in South Dakota, where he made his home for more than two decades.
Lebanon, South Dakota, held a special and lasting significance for Lane and his family. The property there carries deep generational ties, as Lane and his family are descendants of the Weatherer family, whose roots in Lebanon and the surrounding area date back to 1915. That history and connection to the land made Lebanon not just a place to live, but a place of belonging and continuity.
Lane was a builder by nature—of things, of ideas, and of relationships. He co-owned and lovingly worked on The Trail Motel in Gettysburg, dedicating countless hours to restoring, improving, and caring for the property. He took great pride in the work and was deeply invested in its future, often looking ahead with excitement and vision. Above all, Lane loved his family.
Lane loved the outdoors and found peace in nature. He especially enjoyed camping and boating, most often alongside his closest friend, Dan Trudo, with whom he shared countless meaningful moments. He also loved spending time at the local saloon, where he enjoyed playing games with friends, watching sports, and placing the occasional bet. A devoted sports fan, Lane had a love for NASCAR, basketball, and football, and rarely missed an opportunity to follow the action.
Lane’s life was marked by growth, resilience, and faith. Through life’s many seasons, he found strength in his relationship with God and lived with quiet determination and humility. He had a thoughtful nature, a generous heart, and a deep appreciation for simple moments of beauty—especially a good sunrise or sunset. He enjoyed photography as a way to capture those moments.
He is survived by his mother, Dayle; his sister, Kineta; his niece, Cassandra and her husband, Danny; his nieces: Emily, Stephanie, and Alexis; his nephew, Aaron; and his great-niece, Raelyn. He is also survived by many loving cousins and extended family from the Joseph Costales side, as well as his beloved dog, Grace, his constant companion who was rarely far from his side.
Lane was preceded in death by his father, Alonzo Costales, and his sister, Jolee, both of whom passed at a young age. It is a comfort to those who loved him to know they are reunited once again.
Lane will be remembered for his faith, his perseverance, and the love he gave freely to others. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Lane’s arrangements.
