South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has proclaimed May as Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month in South Dakota.
For over 50 years, Historic Preservation Month has been celebrated in South Dakota after being established at the national level. The state added archaeology in 2005 to recognize it as a partner in historic preservation.
The 2026 theme for the month is “Building American History.” This year coincides with the 250th anniversary of American Independence. Individuals are encouraged to celebrate American history and the role all South Dakotans play in shaping their environment.
The proclamation can be read in full at https://history.sd.gov/preservation/archhpmonth.aspx.
