A 33 year old man from Pierre faces 11 charges of rape or sexual contact involving two people under the age of 13.
Jarrett High Bear was indicted Wednesday (May 13, 2026) by a Hughes County Grand Jury. He’s charged with:
- five counts of Rape in the First Degree which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum sentence of up to life in prison for each count;
- two counts of Fourth Degree Rape which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison;
- three counts of Sexual Contact with a Child Under the Age of Sixteen, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for each count; and
- one additional count of Sexual Contact With a Child Under the Age of Sixteen, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office says the crimes are alleged to have occurred between January 2018 and March 2026.
High Bear is being held in the Hughes County Jail on a $25,000 cash bond. He is presumed innocent under the U.S. Constitution.
The Pierre Police Department investigated the case. The Attorney General’s Office and the Hughes County State’s Attorney’s Office will prosecute.
