Pitching reigned supreme on the diamond of Riggs Field Thursday afternoon, but the Pierre Governors were able to string together just enough offense late to top Mitchell in a 2-1 victory. The Kernels were the first to score in the fourth inning stringing three hits together. Mallory Miedema singled for the first hit of the game for either team, and Iris Ackman followed with a drive to right field that one-hopped the fence. Miedema held up on the base path to make sure the ball wouldn’t be caught, but still tried to score all the way from first on the play.
The Governor defense, though, turned in a slick double relay to throw the runner out at home, keeping the game scoreless, at least until Brooklyn Schlimgen followed with a single up the middle to plate Ackman from third. Mitchell had one other chance to score in the fifth, but an appeal call ruled that a baserunner left too early, wiping a would-be second run off the board. The Govs finally registered their first hit against Kernel pitcher Rylee Jennings in the sixth inning on a solid single by Emma Theilen. Courtesy runner Chevelle Brakke ultimately scored from third on an error to tie the game. Then in the seventh inning, Ally Keyes led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out, and then scored the winning run on a passed ball to give the Govs the win. Jennings took the tough-luck loss for Mitchell, despite giving up only two hits and one walk, while striking out nine.
Kenzi Flottmeyer was just as good for Pierre, yielding four hits, two walks and a hit batter, and fanning 11 Kernels, including eight consecutively, at one point to garner the win. Mitchell (3-12) closes their regular season Monday hosting Brookings, while the 5-10 Govs travel to Tea Area Tuesday before ending their regular season hosting Harrisburg next Thursday.
