South Dakota State University Extension is hosting Winter Wheat Variety Tours today (June 9, 2026) at Hayes and Wall.
The free tours will be at SDSU Crop Performance Testing locations, where winter wheat varieties are evaluated within localized field conditions. The first tour is by Hayes starting at 10am CT/9am MT. The second tour is by Wall at 1pm CT/noon MT.
During the tours, SDSU Extension specialists will provide insights into current trial data and highlight factors producers should consider when selecting varieties for the upcoming season. The program will also allow time for farmer networking and a question-and-answer session with SDSU Extension personnel.
SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist Clarence Winter said the tours are an opportunity to walk the plots, observe variety performance firsthand and engage in discussions about agronomic characteristics such as disease resistance, drought tolerance, maturity and yield potential. He says each wheat variety has its own strengths and weaknesses, and choosing the right one is a critical decision for farm profitability and risk management.
Attendees will also have a chance to win a soil probe.
