Annabelle Catherine LaClaire “Thǎté Win” (Windy Woman), 84, of Duluth, MN, began her journey home Thursday, June 11, 2026, at Diamond Willow Assisted Living, Cloquet, MN.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. MDT, Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the CRST Bingo Hall, Eagle Butte. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Cherry Creek, SD.
She was born October 31, 1941, at Cheyenne Agency to Vincent and Margarete Creek-LaClaire. She grew up in Cherry Creek, Greenwood, and outside Eagle Butte at the home of her grandpa, Tom Creek. She attended and graduated the 8th grade at St. Joseph Catholic School in Chamberlin S.D. She went to the relocation program in Chicago IL and earned her CNA certification. Throughout her lifetime she would hold a variety of jobs, from CNA to supervisor at Dupree Manor, to supervisor of the youth program in Dupree S.D. She also worked for the BIA as a school cook in Eagle Butte.
She found time to volunteer doing office work for a non-profit organization in Duluth. She also volunteered to help at the Sandstone Federal Prison through a program by UMD to help Native American inmates. She also volunteered through the “results” organization to lobby in Washington DC.
She was married twice in her lifetime and had nine children: Rick, Aileen, Andi, Renee, Mike, Sharon, Carl, Wanda, and Heather.
After leaving Chicago, and briefly returning to CRST for a few years, she then made Duluth, MN her final home. She enjoyed visiting friends, playing cards, going to the casino, doing crossword puzzles, watching tv shows such as Little House on Prairie, Golden Girls, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and anything “Madea”.
She had great love for her grandchildren, and she would do anything for them. She also had nieces, nephews, and other relatives who held a special place in her heart: Will LaClaire, Misti LaClaire, Berdi LaClaire, Pierre LaClaire, Melda LeClaire, Dana LaClaire, Perry LaClaire, Jenae and Brinley, Thaden, Jared, Alice Charmagne, Cyarah Condon & family and too many to keep individually mentioning.
She loved visiting, teasing and joking. She loved to just have a conversation or to talk about “the way things used to be”. She would talk about who we were related to and how we were related. She believed in the Lakota way of life and came back every summer for the Sundance.
To know her was to know she was generous. She would give her last dollar. She could not pass by a homeless person without helping them.
