Out-of-school time programs at Philip and McIntosh are among 11 such programs in South Dakota sharing $9 million in federal Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers– or 21-C-C-L-C– grants.
The Philip Elementary School Promoting Achievement and Wonder with Scotties (PAWS) Black Hills Special Services Cooperative received just over $983,000 ($983,198) and the McIntosh School District McIntosh 21 Century Project received over $320,000 ($320,388).
The state Department of Education says 21CCLC grants provide resources for programs to establish and expand activities in their community that focus on improving academic achievement and providing family engagement opportunities outside the regular school day.
Secretary of Education Dr. Joe Graves says OST programs positively impact students, families, educators and communities. He says these programs expand beyond the classroom to support students’ learning and provide families an opportunity to further enhance their child’s education.
The competitive biennial grant provides funding ranging from $50,000 to $300,000 per year over a four-year period. Organizations eligible to receive the grants include school districts, community-based organizations, non-profit entities, for-profit entities, local governments, institutions of higher education, public or private organizations, Bureau of Indian Education/tribal schools, and religious organizations.
