A paramedic for American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance service in Pierre is recovering in a Sioux Falls heart hospital after going into sudden cardiac arrest while waiting to assist with a rescue operation happening on the Missouri River north of Pierre Monday (July 27, 2026) morning.
According to AMR, fellow first responders and AMR team members immediately came to the paramedic’s aid. He was taken to the hospital in Pierre, then transferred to Sioux Falls.
AMR officials want to reassure the community that the patient involved in the original emergency call was not affected by this incident and continued to receive appropriate care.
AMR deeply grateful for the quick actions and exceptional teamwork of the first responders and AMR team members who stepped in during this critical situation. AMR says their training, skill and professionalism made an immediate difference.
Additionally, throughout the day, people reached out to AMR to offer concern and well wishes for their team member. AMR says they’re grateful for the outpouring of support, prayers and encouragement from this close-knit community.
