A 19 year old Brookings man died Thursday (Aug. 27, 2026) in a four-vehicle crash near Brookings, South Dakota.
Names of the those involved have not been released pending notification of family members.
Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 2018 Subaru Forester was traveling southbound on Interstate 29 near mile marker 140 in the northbound lanes. At the same time, a 2011 GMC Sierra, 2024 Ford F-350, and 2020 Chevrolet Trax were traveling north in the northbound lanes at the same location. The Subaru struck the GMC causing the Subaru to come to a stop in the roadway. The GMC rotated and struck the Ford. The Chevrolet struck the stopped Subaru, before coming to rest on the shoulder. The driver of the GMC sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the Subaru was life flighted to a Sioux Falls hospital. The occupants of the Ford and the driver of the Chevrolet were not injured.
The investigation is ongoing. All information released is preliminary.
