The Pierre Governors hosted the Mitchell Kernels yesterday for a doubleheader as the Governor Girls looked to stay undefeated and the boys looked for their first win on the season.
The girls started the day with a 4-0 victory earning goals from four different players. Aubrey Fischer was the first to score for Pierre which came early in the match, then late in the first half Cameron Larson put one on a platter for Brittany Sargent who finished to make it 2-0. The Governors continued a suffocating style of play that never allowed Mitchell to get in a rythtym in the second half.
Two more goals for the Govs from Sophia Brueggeman and Lexie Hillmer would be the exclamation points on the fifth win of the season for Pierre, moving them to 5-0-0. This officially marks their best start in recent history.
In the boys game, the Govs finally got the monkey off their back with a commanding 4-0 win. After four games in about seven days to start the year, the Pierre boys were simply exhausted. Not only did they play a ridiculous amount of games in a short stretch, they also played teams that will likely be competing for a State Championship at the end of the year. So, a week of rest did the boys some good.
The Governors were led by their stars Jacoby LaRoche and Caiden Ahartz who each had a hand in all of the goals scored in the 4-0 victory. Ahartz got the scoring started when he put his innate speed and handling on display, carving through the Kernels defense to make it 1-0. Much like the girls, the guys got their second goal late in the first half to carry a 2-0 lead into the break.
In the second, Pierre left no doubt scoring two more goals off the foot of Cael Shrake and Lawson Fravel that put it out of reach for Mitchell, and put Pierre in the win column. The Governor boys improved to 1-2-2 with the win and will host Spearfish on Saturday for another doubleheader.
Coverage Saturday morning will begin at 10:30 AM CT on River 92.7 with game one scheduled to get underway at 11:00 AM.
